Why is the family the greatest adventure?

Caught in a snowstorm in Austria hiking to the top of the Schneeberg in March.

What is an adventure?

Is it an adventure when everything goes as planned? Even if the 'everything' is a trip into the wilderness? I would suggest it is not. Adventure, by definition, happens when you encounter the unexpected. Going on a backpacking trip and getting caught in a snow storm and finding your way back through IS an adventure.

Family is just that - the unexpected. We don't know what type of children we'll get. We don't know how we'll raise them. We don't know what curves life will throw at us. Family is the greatest adventure of all. Having children throws us daily into conflict, sacrifice, making decisions, exhaustion, and surprises. And in the end, it is SO worth it! Just like the trip where you are caught in the snow storm. When you come out the other side, it is the best trip you've ever had. You tell the story over and over again and you wouldn't change a thing. Because, the experience formed you and made you who you are. This is what family does. It forms us.

So, don't quit the journey. Embrace the hardship. Embrace the sacrifice. Enjoy the fulfillment of it all.

Semper Fidelis,

Kenton
